The beaches of: El Sardinero, Liencres, Laredo and Santander, (50-60mins) although there are many others perhaps these are the best known and closest to our Posada
Puente Viesgo Caves (20 mins), is a World Heritage Site.On the side of the Pas river on its way through Puente Viesgo stands the Monte Castillo, an elevated cone-shaped limestone with a maze of caves hidden inside, frequented by man for at least the last 150,000 years.
Five of these caves have Paleolithic rock art, and the highlight is El Castillo cave, discovered by Hermilio Alcalde del Rio in 1903, and the subject of much archaeological research related to the scientific understanding of human development and behaviour during prehistory in southwestern Europe. Castle of Frias, (1hr 30mins) is one of the first fortresses of the 10th century. Located on a cliff overlooking the Tobalina valley, it is one of the most spectacular stone castles of Castile, having a great strategic value. (more info)

Cabarceno Natural Park (40 mins) is home to a large variety of animal species from five continents. The park is distributed over a large area with several species co-existing in some areas.
There are more than 20 km of roads crossing the park which lead to different animal enclousures. You can enjoy driving through beautiful gorges, peaceful lakes and rocky outcrops. Also throughout the park there are numerous parking areas and trails allowing you to discover places of great beauty. (more info)
Santillana del Mar, (45 mins)a historic village housing architectural treasures, the most typical being La Colegiata de Santa Juliana (St. Juliana Collegiate Church) and the jewel in the crown of Roman architecture in Cantabria.
Santillana is also synonymous with the Caves of Altamira, said to be the the Sistine Chapel of cave art, containing prehistoric paintings which are probably the most famous in the world.(more info)
El Soplao Cave (1hr 45mins), discovered in the early twentieth century during the working of the mine in La Florida, is considered one of the great wonders of geology, a treasure trove of cave formations (helictites, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, columns, cave pearls, dogtooth spars, etc..).

The Guggenheim Museum (1hr 45mins), designed by the American architect Frank Gehry, is a magnificent example of twentieth century avant-garde architecture. The building itself is an architectural landmark for its innovative design and creates a seductive backdrop for the contemporary art exhibitions. (more info)
Ojo Guareña and Ermita de San Bernabe, (45min) is a natural monument in the nearby region of Burgos. It has nearly 100km of trails and many caves. A guided tour takes you from part of the trails from March.This makes it one of the most important areas in Spain.
It is located in the Cantabrian Cordillera and it is accessed from Espinosa de los Monteros, Cornejo and Cueva.
The river flows under water inside its solid limestone. The visit should includes the St. Bernabes’ Chapel and La Cueva del Ayuntamiento, the only spaces in the caves that can be visited. There is a network of marked paths outsides.
Palacio de la Magdalena, (55mins) is the emblem of Santander. It doesn’t have a definitive architectural style but is categorized as "picturesque eclectic", a mixture of English and French styles incorporating elements typical of Cantabrian mountain architecture. The eponymous peninsula where it is located has an area of 70 acres. (more info)
